Skills Australia

Skilled Occupations List (SOL) 2011

Skills Australia is currently inviting submissions to the 2012 update of the SOL.

Skills Australia has provided independent advice to the Australian Government on the list of skilled occupations for use in Australia’s General Skilled Migration program.

In February 2010, Skills Australia was asked by Government to develop a new Skilled Occupation List (SOL) for migration purposes and update it on an annual basis. It identifies occupations which are of high value and will assist in meeting the medium and long term needs of the Australian economy.

The first annual update of the SOL was released by the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, the Hon Chris Bowen MP, on 7 June 2011 and is published on the Department of Immigration and Citizenship website. This update ensures that the list of occupations remains contemporary to the skilled migration system over time, and addresses Australia’s skills needs.

  • Fact Sheet: Providing advice to the Australian Government to assist in the development and review of the SOL (PDF 775KB | RTF 9.8MB)
  • Media release: Skills Australia providing advice on the 2011 SOL (PDF 466KB | RTF 98KB)
  • A list of flagged occupations, currently included on the SOL, are being monitored for significant changes in labour market conditions. (PDF 195KB | RTF 80KB)

The SOL is based on the Specialised Occupations List (SpOL) developed by Skills Australia as part of its National Workforce Development Strategy. As part of the SOL process, the SpOL is also updated annually. Further information on its development can be found in Australian Workforce Futures.

The SOL is based on the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) Revision 1, at the six digit occupation level. As part of the release of the new SOL, Skills Australia has developed summary sheets for each of the 192 occupations on the SOL. The summary sheets have been prepared at the four digit ANZSCO level due to the lack of information for some occupations at the six digit level.

The summary sheets outline the occupation’s indicative skill level and how it meets the criteria set by Skills Australia for inclusion on the SOL. Attached to each summary sheet is a detailed description of the labour market and skill shortage research for that particular occupation provided by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.

As part of the review of the SOL, Skills Australia sought stakeholder input and evidence to help inform the composition of the 2011 SOL. All submissions are listed on the Submissions for the 2011 Skilled Occupation List page.
